  • ‘Ta Caliente 🥵: Battling Climate Change, Ignorant Leaders, and Heat Waves in Texas
Climate change is making its debut in Texas this summer, and it's coming in the form of excessive heat and tropical-level humidity. This environmental issue is beginning to pose a threat to public health. Texas leaders like Governor Greg Abbott, Senator Ted Cruz, and Senator John Cornyn are not only denying the existence of climate change, but making the issue worse by continuing to invest in and promote our fossil fuel-dependent economy and by refusing to support legislature that could curb the consequences of climate change. The consequences of this ignorance have been fatal. We know that Black, Indigenous, Latinx and other vulnerable communities will be the ones to suffer from this law the most, and we're already seeing it. In less than 3 weeks, 10 people have died in Laredo, TX due to heat-related illnesses, most, if not all, who were Latinx and elderly. In another case, a Black Texas postal worker died from the heat last month while on the job. These are just a few of the many fatal cases we’ve seen this Summer amid BIPOC Texans. By signing this petition, you are standing up against careless leaders like Abbot who refuse to acknowledge the severity of rising temperatures and extreme heat waves that threaten our communities, health, and environment. Let's protect our comunidad and secure a cooler future for generations to come. 🌍

  • Alderman Cardenas Stop Privatizing Public Spaces
Alderman Cardenas and Chris Frominos, the cafe owner of Sip22, are furthering the gentrification of Little Village by colluding to replace a popular community square in front of the café with a patio area exclusively for customers. Cardenas has already removed the benches from the community square. The public plazita that Cardenas is willing to give away to Frominos is located in Little Village, on the corner of Marshall Blvd and Cermak Rd. This space and the benches are used by people from the community to chill, catch up with friends, take a breather as they take their groceries home, and rest while they walk their pets around the Boulevard. Also, this plazita is used every morning by a beloved Señora who brings us some of the most delicious tamales en el barrio. According to sources inside the Alderman's office, Cardenas called the Chicago Department of Transportation to ask that the benches be removed, allegedly so that they could be repainted. But when community members in the 12th Ward asked for more information, they were told there is no date or deadline for when the benches will be put back. They also said that if the café patio permit is accepted, the benches would be relocated outside of the former community square. The owners of Sip22 are gentrifiers. Sip22 is in Little Village, but they market their building as an extension of Pilsen to attract white and higher income individuals. Rent in Little Village and North Lawndale has been skyrocketing as a result of white and higher income people moving in, displacing poor and working class Latinx and Black residents. The signature of Cardenas is necessary for the patio permit to move forward. Sign the petition and call Alderman Cardenas at 773-523-8250 to ask about the space, demand he not sign the patio permit and demand that the benches be put back INSIDE of our community square immediately.

  • DROP CHARGES AGAINST BRENNON - HE HAS NOT COMMITTED ANY CRIME!
The Army Corps of Engineers recently denied a permit for the construction of a key section of the Pipeline, a major victory for those like Brennon who have been demonstrating for months. There is no reason for him to be charged with those. HELP BRENNON MAKE A CALL: North Dakota State Attorney Allen Koppy @ 701-667-3350 Sample Call: "Hi, I am calling to ask that charges against Brennon Nastacio be removed immediately. He did not commit any crime . Please drop all charges against Brennon!” SEND AN E-MAIL: Allen Koppy: [email protected] To North Dakota State Attorney, Allen Koppy: I am writing to call on you to drop all charges against Brennon Nastacio, a Native American who has not committed any crime, but has charges of “terrorizing.” At the time of the incident, Brennon was openly carrying a knife, which is legal in North Dakota. Not only did he not commit a crime, but he was in complete fulfillment of the law. In spite of facing an armed gunman, he did not charge toward him or threaten him in any way. He has now turned himself in and is now going to follow due process and plead his case in court. There are no grounds for the charges, all charges should be dropped . Please drop charges against Brennon immediately! DONATE http://bit.ly/standingrockfriends

  • Respect the rights of Kanaka Maoli: Protect Mauna Kea and peaceful protestors
We, the undersigned national and international civil society organizations and human rights defenders, urge you to respect Kanaka Maoli, Indigenous Hawaiians, by ensuring the respect of their human rights to exercise cultural practices and to peaceably assemble to protect their sacred Mauna Kea from further desecration and destruction. Ultimately, we demand an immediate end to the pursuance of the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) on Mauna Kea which is the most culturally and spiritually significant site to Kanaka Maoli. Indigenous Peoples have always been connected to and have held reverence for their mountains. Kanaka Maoli hold great reverence for their holy mountain, Mauna Kea, also known as Mauna a Wākea (Mountain of Sky Father). Mauna Kea is said to have arisen from Wākea and Papahānaumoku -- Earth Mother and Sky Father. It is revered as the origin of Hawaiian cosmology and the place where Kanaka Maoli trace their lineage to. Mauna Kea is a place of spiritual connection with one’s ancestors -- a sacred temple. The proposed TMT would be taller than any existing building on Hawai‘i Island at 18 stories high causing further devastation to the cultural landscape and open space in a conservation district that includes hundreds of Hawaiian cultural sites and shrines. This project is led by corporate and foreign interests of the Thirty Meter Telescope International Observatory LLC including the University of California, California Institute of Technology, and the nations of Canada, China, India, and Japan, who intend to systematically ignore and violate the human rights of Kanaka Maoli. The construction of TMT would negatively impact and interfere with the cultural and religious practices of Kanaka Maoli. This is a violation of the standards set by the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), including articles 12 (1) and 25 regarding spiritual practices, and article 32 (2) on free, prior, and informed consent. As articulated in the UNDRIP articles 11 and 12, the United States, including the State of Hawai’i, is obligated to respect the cultural and religious customs of indigenous Hawaiians. In addition, the efforts undertaken by the State of Hawai’i and all parties involved in advancing the TMT project violate General Recommendation 23 of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD), which calls upon State parties to ensure that “indigenous communities can exercise their rights to practice and revitalize their cultural traditions and customs.” The construction of TMT on Mauna Kea is in direct violation of these international legal norms. Pursuing the construction of TMT would be an injustice against Kanaka Maoli and all Indigenous Peoples the United Nations seeks to protect. We, the undersigned national and international civil society organizations and human rights defenders, write in support of the peaceful resistance of Kanaka Maoli at Mauna Kea. We recognize that Kanaka Maoli have experienced discrimination and institutional racism at the hands of the federal and local governments since the illegal occupation of the Kingdom of Hawai’i 126 years ago. We stand in solidarity with Kanaka Maoli as they express their right to self-determination, knowing that their struggle to protect Mauna Kea is felt by Indigenous Peoples around the world. We demand that their peaceful protests are met with respect, and we ask for a prohibition on any and all use of force against nonviolent demonstrators. Finally, we demand an immediate halt to the pursuance of the TMT project on the sacred temple of Mauna Kea. Please contact the US Human Rights Network Deputy Director Salimah Hankins with any questions or concerns regarding this letter: [email protected]. Sincerely, US Human Rights Network
