• Stop requiring driver licenses from students to receive a parking permit !
PXU serves a majority of Latinx brown youth who already face the struggle against immigration policies that affect them and their families. Yet, many youth still continue to fight for a better tomorrow through their education. Many of those young people are also responsible for taking their siblings to school. Therefore, by requiring driver's licenses the district is not only stopping their students from attending school but many times their siblings as well. At Puente, we envision a world where all people have the right to a good quality of life and are treated with dignity. We also believe schools are a place of transformation, where we can begin to experience change. We are asking students to join us and asking the district to: - Parking should be open to all students that need it. - Stop requiring driver licenses from students to receive a parking permit. - Stop collecting information that can identify potential immigration status information. - End policing culture and practices that create obstacles for students to access their education.

  • Universal Pass for Grades (2nd semester)
SHARE AND READ HIGHSCHOOL STUDENTS❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️ Hello PUHSD Students!! as the schools are closing and we begin to transition, I am starting to notice that many of my fellow classmates do not have internet not access to a phone or laptop. My fight as an activist is to implicate/ advocate fairness within our schools and government. Today I am bringing in an idea of a Universal Pass system that yale students have brought to their campus. Essentially this pass would be a “P” grade on our transcript with no effect on our Gpa and we will still get our credit. This is due to Covid-19 and the struggles that have been out of our hands. This will not only help students keep their positions in class, such as valedictorian, and salutatorian for the class of 2020. For the underclass men if you didn’t know their will be no titles for us, so this won’t really affect us. It has already sadden us to not be able to go to school and be apart of the activities and social environment, and it has sadden us much more now that prom is cancelled for multiple schools in the District and most likely graduation (not confirmed). As a junior at central high school, I take into account that many students do not have access to internet, i also understand that many students would prefer this system in place so that we do not have to give up our summer, some students rely on summer for programs, work, college tours, etc. and I to have been accepted to a couple programs for the summer so I see the importance of having this system for our own sake. For the students that are relying on this semester to boost your GPA, maybe we can work together to build a slightly more difficult system that would essentially make grades “f” and “d” a “P”. This has been a very difficult time for students this past week and we understand that this may be difficult, but if #thisiswhoweare then take your students into your thoughts!!! Don’t force us to Fill up schools in the summer!!!

  • Ethnic Studies in the Phoenix Union High School District
Having the option of learning history in a different perspective instead of the “European” perspective allows students to be given the opportunity to learn about their culture or another culture instead of their own. This brings inclusive learning on campuses and it also gets students more interested in their academics if it pertains to their choice in their courses.

  • UC Berkeley: Cut your ties to Palantir!
Palantir Technologies is one of three sponsors of the 2019 Annual Privacy Law Scholars Conference at U.C. Berkeley, a conference of privacy scholars from across the world that brings together computer scientists, economists, philosophers, political scientists, advocates, lawyers, and many others. Palantir, a Palo Alto data-mining firm founded by Peter Thiel, has a contract with ICE that has aided in family separation by helping ICE arrest the parents and other relatives of children who crossed the border alone. Palantir's contract has been called "mission critical" to ICE's efforts by government documents. We're asking that scholars from across the country denounce this partnership with Palantir. Academic conferences should not be sponsored by firms engaged in human rights abuses, as denounced by the United Nations and dozens of civil society organizations. That a conference focused on privacy is sponsored by a firm whose profits derive from the mass accumulation of personal data for sale to law enforcement agencies is patently absurd.

  • Stand Against NC's "Show Me Your Papers" Law (HB 370)
After watching new sheriffs across the state reject local collaboration with ICE, Speaker Tim Moore and NC’s Republican Party want to turn sheriff deputies across the state into immigration agents. A veto by Governor Cooper may be our best and only way of preventing this anti-immigrant bill from passing. HB 370, also known as the “Show Me Your Papers” Law [1], would: - Require sheriff deputies to ask people about their immigration status regardless of criminal charge - Require sheriff deputies to report and detain individuals for ICE. Deputies would have to report the presence of undocumented people to ICE, hand them over to ICE, and comply with any ICE request accompanied by a detainer or ICE hold, which under federal law are voluntary administrative requests and are not the same as criminal judicial warrants. In the last 2 years, two people from North Carolina have died in ICE custody after being turned over by local law enforcement; this bill is literally a matter of life and death for our communities. [2] It would also dramatically increase racial profiling, detentions, deportations, and the separation of families and communities in North Carolina. Rep. Destin Hall who drafted the bill admitted he “took direction from ICE” in sponsoring it - literally working for ICE agents, not the people of the state. [3] The NC GOP wants to use this law to enlist the sheriffs of every county into Trump’s deportation force, and are retaliating against voters across the state who elected a wave of progressive sheriffs in November. They have a legislative majority, and want to use this bill to score political points. We won’t stand for this. On April 3rd the bill was approved by the House. We’re calling on Governor Roy Cooper to stand against it if it passes the Senate, using his veto to stop the bill, and we’re calling on every NC House Democrat to stand with him to sustain his veto. Sign this petition to take a stand against HB 370, to show House Republicans they don’t speak for us, and to demonstrate to Governor Cooper that he should veto this bill. #StopHB370 Coalition includes: Comunidad Colectiva CIMA (Compañeros Inmigrantes de las Montañas) El Pueblo Siembra NC ACLU NC Carolina Justice Policy Center Blueprint NC [1] Updated info & resources on HB 370: http://tiny.cc/HB370info [2] Macon Adkinson, “A Raleigh Man Died of an Apparent Suicide While in Solitary Confinement at a For-Profit Immigration Prison in Georgia” Indyweek, Jul. 13, 2018, available at: https://indyweek.com/news/archives/raleigh-man-died-apparent-suicide-solitary-confinement-for-profit-immigration-prison-georgia/; Jeremy Redmon, “ICE detainee who hanged himself had history of mental health problems,” AJC, July 11, 2017, available at: https://www.ajc.com/news/state--regional-govt--politics/ice-detainee-who-hanged-himself-had-history-mental-health-problems/MF8JWWpA8v3wefl5BjgLhO/ [3] Statement at 4:33: https://spectrumlocalnews.com/nc/triangle-sandhills/capital-tonight-interviews/2019/03/21/rep--destin-hall-on-ice-cooperation-bill#

  • SIGN NOW! Governor Doug Ducey denounce White Supremacy or Resign!
As outward white supremacy is on the rise, we can not allow for elected representatives to not be held accountable for racist acts. The community cringed when Ducey praised Trump’s clemency for former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who terrorized migrant communities and racially profiled black and brown people for over two decades. The governor, who earlier in his political career sought Arpaio’s endorsement, didn’t hesitate to stand by Trump who has ferociously attacked us since he came into office. This weekend Governor Doug Ducey continues to side with bigotry and hate by posing for a picture with known racist. For the past week tens of thousands of teachers have been on strike and Ducey has shunned them like he has the migrant and people of color communities in Arizona for the last four years. Gov. Doug Ducey, we demand that you Denounce White Supremacy or RESIGN!

  • Release Immigrant Rights Activist Alejandra Pablos from Detention
Alejandra Pablos, a reproductive rights and immigrant rights organizer, wast taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on March 7th, 2018 and is being held at the Eloy Detention Center in Southern Arizona, without access to a bond. Alejandra's case is complicated. As a young person she was arrested and convicted of several charges, including Driving Under the Influence and possession of drug paraphernalia, some of which were felonies under Arizona state law. In 2011, after she complied with the orders from the court, she spent 2 years at the Eloy Detention Center in Southern Arizona, lost her residency, and was placed in deportation proceedings. But since Alejandra was released from detention she has worked to advocate for human and civil rights, dedicating her life to organizing against the attacks on immigrant rights and fighting for reproductive rights. As part of her local organizing, in early January of this year, as Pablos was leading chants at a peaceful protest in Virginia outside of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), she was singled out and detained by DHS agents. Although she was released, this flagged her case. When Pablos showed up to her check-in with ICE in Tucson, she was taken into custody and not allowed to pay a bond. Pablos is a nationally recognized immigrant rights and reproductive rights, activist. She works as a Field Coordinator for the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, where she organizes to raise the voices of Latinas in Virginia for policy change at all levels of government on issues that impact their lives, women’s health care, and other social justice issues. Alejandra has been a staunch advocate for immigration reform and mass incarceration. She is a member of Mijente, a national political Latinx organization, and has worked with many immigrant rights and prison abolition organizers throughout the country.

  • Give Immigrants and Youth a Vote on Philly School Board!
Philadelphia has won back local control of our School Board after almost two decades of state control over our public schools. For too many years our families have felt powerless in trying to improve our schools but now we see an opportunity for change. As the city and our Mayor prepare to appoint new School Board members we must ensure that the voices of those most impacted by an unjust and unequal education system are at the forefront of how decisions are made. Philadelphia is home to tens of thousands of immigrants and their voice and vote MUST be a part of this new school board if we wish to call ourselves a welcoming city. That is why we ask that you sign this petition in support of having two amazing immigrant rights leaders, Olivia Ponce and Edgar Villegas, appointed to our next school board so they can represent our community with their voice and with a power to vote on decisions that will affect our everyday lives. Olivia Ponce is an is an immigrant mother from Mexico of two and community leader in South Philadelphia. She has a daughter who graduated from the School District of Philadelphia and has a son who is a freshman at Central High School. As such, she has experienced first hand the hurdles faced by many immigrant families in our city. In 2012 while her son's elementary school was slated for closure, she helped lead organizing efforts to keep her son's school open. Eventually his school was closed but it was her leadership along with many others that prevented many other schools from closing that year. She has passionately fought for language access in schools, more equitable funding for children of color, ending the criminalization of youth, parent participation in their schools regardless of immigration status and has been active in pushing for Sanctuary Schools. Edgar Villegas is a 15-year-old freshman who attends the Creative and Performing Arts High School. He is the son of undocumented parents from Mexico, and as such he knows firsthand the experience of growing up in a mixed status household. He got involved with the latino immigrant rights organization Juntos when he was 13 years old because he understood the growing threat of deportation that many undocumented people in his community face and wanted to fight back against it. While studying at Abigail Vare School in 2012, he was active in the organizing efforts to keep his school open. He strongly believes in the power of youth leadership and is committed in ensuring that all young people, regardless of immigration status, have their voices heard when it comes to their education

  • Let us Watch Mama Coco without Forcing a Preview of Frozen
It's exciting to have movies that explore an important part of Mexican and Latinx culture in such a creative way. It's disappointing, angering, insulting to have to watch a 30-minute teaser of a Christmas story based on "Frozen" before. To add insult to injury, the "Frozen" short shows a town of White people figuring out whether to steal other people's traditions. We thought we were at the wrong movie, but turns out we should just have shown up about 30 minutes late. #30minuteslateforCoco #CulturalImperialism #ReleaseMamaCocofromFrozen

  • Defend DACAmented Youth by Keeping Phoenix Police Out of our Campus
With the end of DACA, students of Phoenix Union High School District (PUSD), our friends, and our families, can no longer deal with the prospect of criminalization or deportation hanging over the heads of Phoenix Union youth. We need the Phoenix Union High School District to take a position and defend and protect DACAmented youth, students of color and all other youth subject to criminalization by removing police and the threat they represent from all of our campuses. President Donald Trump has moved solidly with and anti-immigrant agenda. One of the first actions as President was to change immigration priorities, he has now rescinded the DACA program and suggested all federally funded law enforcement must ask for documentation. Here in Maricopa county, he pardoned Joe Arpaio, a person who has terrorized our families for over 20 years. We need to know that we are supported in our schools and that our attendance to our campuses does not put us or our families at risk. A safe school is a school with enough teachers, enough social services, enough books, school programs like art, music, and other activities that will create whole and healthy communities. A safe school cannot be defined by over-policing. Phoenix Union High School District does not need police officers. SRO's on campuses are the wrong answer to solving disciplinary issues with young people that need intervention based on love and guidance. We must work together to find solutions beyond policing and treating our schools as prisons.
